Summer Vacation!?

As I type, I am sitting on my back deck enjoying the summer breeze and the sun through the trees!  What a great start to the summer!  In the last two weeks, I have caught up on all of the lawn work that I was too busy to do during the school year.  We have already held one of our famous “deck parties”, this time with a “Fiesta!” theme, and we had a great time.  We only have a few more weeks to our annual 4th of July bash!  The summer is progressing nicely, but I already feel like it is going to go fast!

This year, my wife and I made a pledge that we would have some kind of an outing at least once a week all summer.  This week, we hope to enjoy swimming and hot-tubbing at a friend’s house, and we also have plans to take Norah, our 1-year old to an animal park, to the beach, and other things that we haven’t thought of yet.  I can’t wait to see what the summer holds.

From a music standpoint for me, this is the time of year when I get to play the most.  I usually end up playing about 4-5 gigs with about 2-3 different groups each, just doing fill-in work.  And, for the last 15 years, I have been playing in the Mercer Community Band.  I look forward to these opportunities every year.  I especially look forward to the community band gigs.  We rehearse the night before for a few hours and then have the concerts on Friday nights on the courthouse square.  What I really like about it is that it takes me back in history to a time when every community had a group that played in the town square on a regular basis.  This group closely follows the programming style of John Philip Sousa, which is also makes it a lot of fun to play in.  Each week, during the concerts, I sit and think about what it must have been like in the late 1800s and early 1900s – having these groups performing for their communities around the country.  It really is like being a part of history, and they’ve been doing it in Mercer for 30 years!

I definitely feel different about this summer.  I feel more relaxed than I ever have, and I attribute that to the fact that I actually got organized for next school year before school let out two weeks ago.  All of the marching band students have already received their music and calendars for next fall’s marching season.  This is the first time I have passed out the music before the students left for the summer, and I think I’m going to be glad that I did it.  We are also holding optional music rehearsals once a week starting in July, and I think that will go a long way to getting a lot more done in our August camp this year.  I also think that most of the musicians are going to show up, even though it is optional…at least I hope!! This is probably the most that I have worked during the summer, but I think it is really going to pay off.  Wow, this summer “break” is really going to fly by!

So, I am looking forward to a great summer, and I have even made it a goal to get some golfing in…probably between writing drill!
